Remote team socials are hard

If you’re surrounded by your co-workers every day it’s easy to spend quality time together during lunch, coffee breaks, and ping pong. Working remotely is far less distracting, so you will need to be a lot more intentional about hanging out with your team.

Sure you could just host a video call with 8 people and chat. Maybe you even order drinks and dinner. But with a team split across four time zones, having a margarita for breakfast isn’t always an option.

It’s also unnatural how we talk on video calls as a group. In-person conversations are dynamic, constantly breaking up into smaller groups and coming back together. Video calls are basically an open mic night with one speaker at a time.

It’s also interesting to observe what is socially acceptable in-person vs. online. Going to the cinema together with your team is considered a fun activity, but watching Netflix together online would be weird. Even though it’s kinda the same thing, you’d just be more comfortable.

Once we figured out whether it’s okay to eat on a Zoom call, I’m sure we’ll see a lot of innovation around virtual social…
